Research in Dimensions of Societal Security

From sociological point of view, study and identification of societal security involves identification and determination of security position in sociological schools. It also involves proper and appropriate exchange of opinions and interaction with the thinkers of security study. But it is worth menting that discussion about societal security has not a long history. Due to limited number of studies in this field and complications and ambiguity of the subject, the present research tries to focus on social foundations of security to prepare the ground for understanding societal security.

For this purpose, and also to provide a relatively comprehensive theoretical pattern of societal security, in the present research, first the English terms which have been translated to societal security are reviewed, then, the view points of thinkers who have conducted study in societal security (Barry Buzan, Ole Weaver, Bjorn Moller, Robert Mandel) are evaluated, then considering the theoretical assumption of classic sociologists, August Comte, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, George Herbert Mead and Talcott Parsons regarding the nature and elements of society continuity of Anthony Giddens about security will be studied. Having explained the similarities and differences in the theories of sociologists and theoreticians conducting studies in the field of societal security, the terms security and society will be analyzed and a theoretical pattern of societal security planned and compiled.

In order to evaluate the assumed theoretical pattern and ability of assessment of societal security, a survey was conducted on families residing in north and south of Tehran. Based on the theoretical patterns, the family's societal security was defined and several aspects were studies taking into account characteristics of Iranian family and limitations of research including life, health, financial, professional, emotional and ethical security.

In order to put the family's societal security into operation and the possibility of assessing its dimensions, some indices were considered in the form of Likert scale according to the fact that security is essentially a mental concept that is directly associated with mentality and understanding of people regarding vulnerability and threats.

The questionnaires were distributed in two selected districts of three and eighteen of Tehran among 420 families based on cluster sampling method. The families under core study, were nuclear and spouse, in the first stage of marriage, with at least one child. The questionnaires were complete by father or mother. After collection of information, the information were analyzed in two descriptive and inferential statistics level.

Research findings show that the families living in northern Tehran, enjoy more societal security than the people residing in south of Tehran due to the characteristics of the residence area, higher education level, having more prestigious professions, and enjoying more welfare status. Also men enjoy more societal security more than women do. There is more societal security for average-age families (due to inexperience) and old families due to (disability and deprivation).

In this way, using the resulting findings, the presented pattern of societal security was confirmed and components of societal security for maintenance of social unit and promotion of social units which is attributable to the qualitative and quantitative levels of groups, were proved in family.
